The Importance of Dry Wood

Burning dry, seasoned wood is crucial for a cleaner flue, as wet or green wood produces more smoke and creosote. Creosote is a byproduct of combustion that can accumulate in the flue, increasing the risk of a chimney fire.

Ensure the wood you burn has been seasoned for at least six months to a year, with a moisture content of less than 20%. Properly seasoned wood burns more efficiently, produces less smoke, and helps keep your chimney cleaner.

Types of Firewood to Use

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory are excellent choices for burning, as they produce more heat, burn longer, and generate less creosote than softwoods. Hardwoods contribute to a cleaner flue by burning hotter and more efficiently.

On the other hand, softer woods like pine should be avoided for regular burning, as they tend to produce more sap and creosote buildup. Choosing the right type of firewood not only keeps your flue cleaner but also enhances the safety and efficiency of your fireplace.

Proper Storage for Firewood

Storing firewood correctly is essential to ensure it stays dry and ready for use. Stack firewood off the ground and cover the top with a tarp, leaving the sides open for air circulation.

Position the woodpile in a sunny area to help natural drying, and rotate the wood so that the driest logs are used first. Proper storage practices prevent moisture and decay, ensuring you always have quality wood to burn.
